A man was killed after being struck by a vehicle on Highway 99 in Fresno early Tuesday morning, January 27, 2026.
According to the California Highway Patrol, officers first received calls around 12:10 a.m. reporting a Toyota Prius stopped in the fast lane on the State Route 99 to State Route 180 eastbound transition, with a man running in and out of traffic.
CHP arrived and located the vehicle with the driver’s door open and the engine running. No damage was observed, and the vehicle was moved from the roadway.
Approximately 35 minutes later, CHP received additional calls reporting a man running in and out of traffic on southbound Highway 99 near Fresno Street. Minutes later, officers received reports that the man had been struck by a vehicle near Belmont Avenue. Investigators said a 37-year-old man was walking in the southbound lanes when he was struck by a Subaru Impreza driven by a 22-year-old man.
Officers arrived and found the pedestrian, identified as Andrew M. of Fresno, lying in the roadway. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Subaru sustained moderate injuries and was transported to a hospital, where he was later arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.
Authorities said it was unknown whether the pedestrian was under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the crash. The incident remains under investigation by the CHP.
