One person was killed, and seven others were injured following a wrong-way crash involving multiple vehicles on Interstate 680 in Contra Costa County, late Friday night, May 1, 2026.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash occurred around 11:23 p.m. in the Concord and Walnut Creek area, just north of Treat Boulevard.
Authorities reported that a wrong-way driver traveling southbound in the northbound lanes collided with multiple vehicles. A passenger in one of the vehicles was pronounced dead at the scene.
Four individuals, including the wrong-way driver, sustained major injuries, while three others suffered minor injuries.
The suspect, identified as a woman driving a Dodge Charger, was transported to a hospital and later determined to have been impaired at the time of the crash.
Officials stated that the driver was placed under arrest while receiving medical treatment. Charges are still being determined.
Authorities continue to investigate the incident.
