[07-17-2025] One Killed, Another Arrested in DUI Crash on SR-49 North of Yuba Pass RoadOne man was killed and another was arrested after a crash on SR-49 north of Yuba Pass Road in Sierra County on Thursday evening, July 17, 2025.

According to the California Highway Patrol, Richard P., 50, of Redding, was driving a 2021 GMC pickup northbound at an unknown speed when he lost control due to intoxication. The vehicle left the roadway, struck a metal advisory sign, and continued onto the shoulder, where it collided with large pine trees.

Passing motorists stopped to assist and found Richard and his passenger, Eric M., 48, also of Redding, unconscious. 

Emergency responders from several agencies, including the Sierraville Fire Department and the United States Forest Service, arrived at the scene. Richard regained consciousness, while Eric remained unconscious and had to be extricated from the vehicle.

Eric was flown to Renown Medical Center for treatment of life-threatening injuries, but tragically succumbed to his injuries on July 21, 2025. Richard, who was found to be under the influence of alcohol, was arrested and booked into the Nevada County Jail.

The incident remains under investigation by the California Highway Patrol’s Quincy Area Office and the Sierra County District Attorney’s Office.
