[07-10-2025] One Person Killed in Two-Vehicle DUI Crash Near Covert and Toomes RoadsOne person was killed in a two-vehicle DUI crash in the Salida area of Stanislaus County early Thursday morning, July 10, 2025.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident occurred around 3:41 a.m. at the intersection of Covert and Toomes roads. Authorities found a sedan with a deceased 67-year-old Salida resident inside.

A second vehicle involved, driven by 20-year-old Luis U. of Modesto, was located approximately a mile away at Hammett and Bacon roads. Preliminary investigations revealed that Luis had run a stop sign and struck the victim’s vehicle. The driver of the struck sedan died from injuries sustained in the crash.

CHP stated that Luis fled the scene but was later located and arrested. Officers determined he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash.

He was booked into the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center on charges of felony DUI, hit-and-run, and vehicular manslaughter.

No further details were immediately available.
