A crash involving a Tesla and a commercial concrete truck led to a hazardous material spill that shut down multiple lanes on northbound Interstate 15 near Friars Road in San Diego on Wednesday morning, July 9, 2025.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident occurred shortly after 8:15 a.m. when a 911 caller reported debris covering the #3 and #4 lanes along with the Friars Road off-ramp. CHP later confirmed the substance was a grease wastewater mixture, classified as hazardous.
The spill stemmed from a crash between a blue Tesla and the truck. CalTrans and Hazmat crews arrived by 9:30 a.m. to begin cleanup, which was expected to take about three hours. A SIG Alert was issued and lanes were projected to remain closed until around 2:00 p.m.
The incident caused significant traffic congestion, with delays affecting the westbound 8 Freeway and pushing detoured traffic onto the 805 Freeway. No injuries were reported, and the crash remains under investigation.
