![[05-22-2025] One Killed, Three Seriously Injured in Suspected Hit-And-Run Crash on I-5 Near Los Banos](https://ak1.to//0XSL.webp)
A man was killed and three others suffered major injuries in a suspected hit-and-run crash involving a van and a big rig in Merced County early Thursday morning, May 22, 2025.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the incident occurred shortly before 5:00 a.m. on Interstate 5 near Highway 152, west of Los Banos.
A van carrying eight individuals was attempting to exit the highway when it was rear-ended by a big rig. The impact forced the van off the road, where it struck a guardrail and went down an embankment.
One man was ejected from the van and pronounced dead at the scene. Three other men sustained major injuries and were transported to the hospital. Officers noted that none of the four injured occupants were wearing seatbelts. The other four passengers, who were restrained, were not injured.
The van had reportedly originated from Mendota. The driver of the big rig fled the scene, and the incident is being investigated as a hit-and-run.
The identity of the deceased has not yet been released. The crash remains under investigation by the CHP.
