[05-21-2025] Two Killed in Head-On Collision on Highway 4 Near Fairview Avenue in BrentwoodTwo people were killed in a head-on collision on Highway 4 near Fairview Avenue in Brentwood on Wednesday night, May 21, 2025.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at approximately 10:20 p.m. in the eastbound lanes of Highway 4, just east of Balfour Road. 

CHP officers arrived to find two vehicles that had collided head-on. One of the vehicles, an electric SUV, had caught fire, creating a hazardous battery fire that initially prevented emergency personnel from safely approaching the vehicle.

Both drivers involved in the crash were fatally injured and pronounced dead at the scene. Due to the fire, authorities were unable to immediately confirm whether additional occupants were inside the electric SUV.

The Contra Costa County Fire District also responded to the scene and assisted in containing the blaze.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
