A driver suffered injuries, and a 30-year-old man was arrested following a DUI hit-and-run crash at East Kern Street and Highway 119 in Taft on Wednesday afternoon, November 20, 2024.
According to the Taft Police Department, the suspect, identified as Jose M., attempted to turn westbound on East Kern Street in a Volkswagen, colliding with a Mercedes. The impact injured the Mercedes driver, who was transported to Bakersfield Hospital for treatment.
Jose M. fled the scene, leaving his wallet with identification in the vehicle. City employees detained him on the 100 block of Adkisson Way. Witnesses detained a passenger from the Volkswagen at Veterans Memorial Park.
Neither the driver nor his passenger was injured in the crash, which also knocked down a light pole and damaged a fence.
The suspect was arrested for felony drunk driving, felony hit-and-run, and driving without a license. He is being held at Lerdo Jail with a $51,000 bail.
Police are investigating the incident.
