[10-16-2024] Police Pursuit Ends in Multi-Vehicle Crash, Injuring Several People in OaklandA police pursuit involving a suspected stolen vehicle resulted in a multi-vehicle crash near MacArthur Boulevard and Calaveras Avenue in Oakland on Wednesday, October 16, 2024.

The incident began around 1:40 p.m. when Berkeley police received an alert from an Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) indicating a possible stolen vehicle. 

Officers located the vehicle in a grocery store parking lot in downtown Berkeley, where the driver attempted to flee. In the process, the suspect struck a patrol vehicle, narrowly avoided hitting another, and drove onto a sidewalk, nearly hitting pedestrians.

The pursuit continued into Oakland, where the suspect vehicle collided with two other vehicles at the intersection of MacArthur Boulevard and Calaveras Avenue. 

Police took the suspects, an adult female driver and an adult male passenger, into custody. The driver faced charges of vehicle theft, hit-and-run, and assault with a deadly weapon, while the passenger was detained on an outstanding felony warrant and other charges.

Both suspects were transported to the hospital for medical evaluation, while the driver of one of the struck vehicles and a Berkeley police officer were also hospitalized with injuries. 

The investigation is ongoing.
