[10-13-2024] Two Dead, Including Child, in Fatal Crash Involving Bakersfield Patrol Vehicle on Niles StreetTwo people, including a 2-year-old child, were killed in a fatal crash involving a police patrol vehicle in Bakersfield on Sunday morning, October 13, 2024. 

The collision occurred around 5:40 a.m. as officers traveled westbound on Niles Street, where a northbound vehicle on Kern Street reportedly struck the patrol car.

According to the Bakersfield Police Department, the driver of the northbound vehicle was ejected and pronounced dead at the scene. 

A 2-year-old child and an adult front-seat passenger from the vehicle were transported to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, where the passenger later died from injuries sustained in the crash.

The officers in the patrol vehicle were hospitalized with minor to moderate injuries and are expected to recover.

Witnesses reported that the northbound vehicle was traveling at a high rate of speed and failed to stop at a posted stop sign before colliding with the patrol car. Authorities are investigating the possible involvement of alcohol or drugs in the incident.
