[10-07-2024] Alameda County, CA – Man Killed After Traffic Collision in East Oakland Homeless Encampment

[10-07-2024] Man Killed After Traffic Collision in East Oakland Homeless Encampment A man in his 50s was found dead at a homeless encampment in East Oakland, having been struck by a portion of a wrought iron fence that was impacted by an out-of-control vehicle on Monday morning, October 7, 2024.

Police reported that the man’s body was discovered around 11:00 a.m. on October 9, 2024, in the 2200 block of East 12th Street, where he had been living. He is believed to have sustained fatal injuries around 2:20 a.m. on Monday.

Preliminary investigations indicate that two cars were traveling westbound at high speeds when one vehicle side-swiped the other near 23rd Avenue. This caused a 2008 Acura TL to lose control and crash into the fence surrounding the encampment, striking the man who was standing just inside.

The Acura’s driver was treated for minor injuries and released from a hospital, reportedly unaware that someone had been struck. The second vehicle involved in the incident fled the scene, and authorities are actively seeking that driver.

A woman residing in the encampment discovered the deceased man on Wednesday and notified the police. She described him as a friendly person who had lived in the area for at least six months.

The police investigation is ongoing.

Don’t Know What To Do After An Accident?

Your safety and rights depend on what you do next after an accident. Remember the following steps if you find yourself in one:

  • Check yourself for any injuries.
  • Stay on the scene, call 9-1-1, and wait for emergency responders.
  • Move your vehicle to the road shoulder if safe; turn on hazard lights.
  • Fully cooperate with law enforcement and stay until cleared to leave.
  • Document the scene and injuries with photos and videos.
  • Seek immediate medical attention.
  • Contact your insurance company and find a personal injury lawyer for legal advice.

What A Lawyer Can Do For You

Many victims put off calling a lawyer even if they sustain injuries after an accident. However, lawyers can help you in many ways. They can provide you with police reports, CCTV footage, and witness statements to strengthen your case. Your attorney will also negotiate with insurance companies to get you fair compensation. The best part is that they will do all of these things for you at no upfront cost. So if you’re injured in an accident, hire a personal injury attorney to recover medical bills, car repair costs, lost wages, and pain and suffering.
