[08-19-2024] Tow Truck Driver Loses Leg in Multi-Vehicle Collision in Costa MesaA tow truck driver reportedly lost his left leg when a sedan, allegedly driven at a high rate of speed, crashed into his tow truck during a multi-vehicle collision in Costa Mesa early Monday morning, August 19, 2024.

The California Highway Patrol received the first report of the incident at approximately 2:30 a.m. The crash occurred on the northbound Costa Mesa (55) Freeway just south of the San Diego (405) Freeway. 

Initial reports indicated that a two-door sedan had struck the right shoulder wall, with a passenger found on the ground with an injured arm.

A black sedan, reportedly involved in the crash and moving at high speeds, struck the tow truck driver, who was outside of his vehicle at the time. The collision resulted in major injuries, including the loss of the driver’s left leg, according to the CHP.

Details regarding the total number of vehicles involved in the crash and whether other occupants stopped to render aid were not immediately clear.
