[07-06-2026] Humboldt County, CA – Two Killed, One Injured After Vehicle Crashes Into Mattole River Near Petrolia

Two people were killed, and another person was injured after a vehicle crashed over an embankment and into the Mattole River near Petrolia in Humboldt County, on Monday morning, July 6, 2026.

According to the Petrolia Volunteer Fire Department, the crash was reported around 2:30 a.m. Emergency crews from Petrolia, Cal Fire, Southern Humboldt Technical Rescue, Honeydew Volunteer Fire Company, the California Highway Patrol, and City Ambulance responded to the scene.

Firefighters arrived and found a vehicle submerged in the river after going over an embankment. Three people were found along the riverbank, and crews provided emergency medical care.

Two people were pronounced dead at the scene. Another person survived and was transported by ambulance after responders carried the patient up the steep embankment.

The identities of those involved and the condition of the surviving person have not been released.

The investigation remains ongoing.
