[07-01-2026] San Diego County, CA – Multiple Injured in Wrong-Way Head-On Crash on I-8 Near College Ave.

Multiple people were injured following a wrong-way crash on Interstate 8 in San Diego on Wednesday morning, July 1, 2026.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash occurred around 10:40 a.m. on westbound I-8 near the College Avenue on-ramp after a black Mercedes SUV entered the freeway traveling in the wrong direction.

Authorities said the vehicle had previously fled from a San Diego Police Department traffic stop before entering the freeway from Mission Gorge Road and continuing eastbound in the westbound lanes. The Mercedes then collided head-on with a Honda Odyssey SUV.

CHP reported that the elderly driver of the Honda and a passenger in the Mercedes sustained major injuries and were transported to local hospitals. The driver of the Mercedes reportedly fled the scene on foot but was later detained and also taken to a hospital with major injuries.

Authorities continue to investigate the crash.
