A 12-year-old child sustained major injuries following an electric bike collision in San Luis Obispo on Saturday afternoon, May 9, 2026.
According to the San Luis Obispo Police Department, officers and fire personnel responded around 4:30 p.m. to reports of a vehicle versus bicyclist collision at DeVaul Park near Spooner Drive and Welsh Court.
Authorities stated that the child was riding an electric bike and was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash. The child was initially treated at a local hospital before being airlifted to an out-of-area trauma center due to the severity of the injuries. Officials said the child underwent several surgeries and is currently in stable condition.
The driver, identified only as a San Luis Obispo resident, remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators. Police reported that impairment did not appear to be a factor in the collision.
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the incident.
