One person was killed, and another was injured following a head-on crash in Kern County on Sunday night, December 14, 2025.
According to the California Highway Patrol, officers were called to the scene around 9:28 p.m. on northbound Highway 14, north of Backus Road.
CHP said a man driving a white Chevrolet Malibu was traveling in the number one lane of southbound Highway 14 north of Backus Road, while another man was driving a blue Mercedes-Benz in the number one lane of northbound Highway 14.
Investigators said the Chevrolet made an unsafe turning movement to the left, left the roadway, crossed the dirt center median, and entered the northbound lanes, where it collided head-on with the Mercedes.
The driver of the Chevrolet Malibu died from his injuries and was identified by the Kern County Coroner’s Office as 35-year-old John J. of Los Angeles. The driver of the Mercedes-Benz sustained moderate to major injuries.
The investigation is ongoing.
