A 4-year-old girl was killed and a 36-year-old man sustained minor injuries after a Can-Am Maverick overturned in the open desert north of State Route 78, near Old Mine Road, in Imperial County on Saturday evening, October 18, 2025.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash occurred around 6:20 p.m. as the 36-year-old man was driving the 2024 Can-Am eastbound at an unknown speed. For reasons still under investigation, the vehicle struck a raised dirt berm and overturned on the desert terrain.
The 4-year-old passenger was ejected from the Can-Am and pronounced dead at the scene. The driver, who was the only restrained occupant, sustained minor injuries. The Imperial County Coroner’s Office responded to the scene and took custody of the child’s body.
Following the investigation, the 36-year-old driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol.
Authorities continue to investigate the crash.
