A 32-year-old man was killed after stepping into traffic on Highway 74 in Homeland, Riverside County, on Friday, Octobe 10, 2025.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash occurred shortly after midnight on eastbound Highway 74, just east of Melba Avenue.
The pedestrian, identified only as a Hemet resident, was walking on the north side shoulder when he turned to cross the westbound lanes, initially avoiding traffic. He then crossed into the eastbound lanes and stepped directly into the path of a 2003 Kia Sorrento traveling at roughly 45 mph.
The impact of the crash caused the man to come to rest on the ground. Riverside County Fire Department paramedics pronounced the pedestrian dead at the scene. The 18-year-old Hemet man driving the Kia was not injured.
Officers questioned the driver but did not arrest him. The nearest marked crosswalk was nearly a mile west at Leon Road.
The investigation is ongoing.
