[08-30-2025] 71-Year-Old Motorcyclist Seriously Injured in Collision with SUV on Highway 154A 71-year-old man was seriously injured in a collision with an SUV on Highway 154 in the mountains above Santa Barbara on Saturday afternoon, August 30, 2025.

According to the Santa Barbara County Fire Department, emergency personnel were dispatched shortly before 4:00 p.m. to the crash near Painted Cave Road. 

The highway was temporarily closed in both directions while responders tended to the injured motorcyclist and cleared the wreckage. Eastbound traffic was diverted to San Marcos Road.

Fire Capt. Scott Safechuck said the motorcyclist suffered serious injuries and was transported by AMR ambulance to Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital. The driver and sole occupant of the SUV declined medical treatment. 

Witnesses told officers that the motorcyclist was using a non-passing lane to pass other vehicles at the time of the collision, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The collision remains under investigation by the CHP.
