Five people were injured after two back-to-back crashes along Varner Road in Thousand Palms, Riverside County, on Monday morning, October 7, 2024.
The incidents began around 6:00 a.m. on Varner Road near Bob Hope Drive. The first crash was a head-on collision involving a silver Nissan Frontier and a blue Toyota Camry.
According to California Highway Patrol Officer David Torres, the Nissan attempted to pass on the road but collided head-on with the Toyota.
Authorities reported that there were three occupants in the Toyota, two of whom were trapped and required rescue. The truck contained one person.
Following the first crash, a Good Samaritan stopped to assist but was struck by another vehicle while exiting their car. This individual was transported to the hospital with serious injuries.
Three individuals sustained major injuries, while two others suffered moderate to minor injuries.
The investigation into the collision is ongoing.
