[08-31-2026] Alameda County, CA – Multi-Vehicle Crash Sparks 10-Acre Fire on I-580 in Livermore

A multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 580 in Livermore sparked a vegetation fire and temporarily shut down freeway lanes on Monday afternoon, August 31, 2026.

According to a California Highway Patrol incident log, four or five vehicles crashed around 1:00 p.m. near the I-580/I-205 interchange and Midway Road.

CHP reported that one vehicle left the roadway and overturned, while at least one vehicle became fully engulfed in flames. The driver was able to exit the burning vehicle.

The flames spread from the vehicle to nearby grass and fields along eastbound I-580, eventually burning approximately 10 acres. Firefighters stopped the fire’s forward progress, and 100% containment was reported around 2:29 p.m.

CHP temporarily shut down westbound I-580 and issued a SigAlert closing eastbound lanes at the I-205 split. Most lanes reopened around 1:42 p.m., although one lane remained closed later while crews worked on hot spots.

Information regarding possible injuries from the multi-vehicle collision was not immediately available.
