A man was killed, and a woman was hospitalized following two related crashes on the San Bernardino (10) Freeway in West Covina early Saturday, August 31, 2024.
The initial crash occurred around 4:00 a.m. on the eastbound freeway, west of Citrus Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol.
A 2011 Toyota Camry, driven by a 20-year-old man, collided with the rear of a 2012 Honda Civic, driven by a 72-year-old man identified as Jose C. in the freeway’s fast lane. The impact pushed the Civic into the far right lane, where it collided with a 2023 Kenworth big rig driven by a 64-year-old man.
The Civic was ultimately disabled in the fast lane and was struck by a 2021 Mazda 3 driven by a 19-year-old woman. The 72-year-old man died at the scene as a result of one or both crashes.
The injured woman, a passenger in the Mazda, was transported to a hospital with moderate injuries.
