[08-26-2026] San Luis Obispo County, CA – One Killed, Two Injured in Wrong-Way DUI Crash on Highway 101

One person was killed, and two drivers suffered major injuries in a five-vehicle wrong-way collision on Highway 101 in San Luis Obispo late Wednesday night, August 26, 2026.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash was reported around 11:15 p.m. in the southbound lanes of Highway 101 at Hawk Hill, south of the Cuesta Grade.

CHP said David R. was driving a GMC Canyon the wrong way in the No. 1 southbound lane when the GMC collided head-on with a Dodge Charger. Three additional vehicles were also involved in the collision.

The drivers of the GMC and Dodge were transported to a hospital with major injuries. A 55-year-old Grover Beach man who was riding in the right front passenger seat of the GMC was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity was not immediately released.

CHP officers arrested David on suspicion of driving under the influence. The CHP continues to investigate the fatal collision.
