A passenger died following a single-vehicle crash near Clifton Court Forebay in Contra Costa County on Sunday night, August 3, 2025.
According to the California Highway Patrol, officers responded to the crash at approximately 9:40 p.m. and discovered a Toyota sedan overturned and submerged in the water near the reservoir.
Investigators said the vehicle had been traveling on a dirt road adjacent to the body of water when it veered off course. The Toyota struck several large rocks near the edge and overturned into the water.
The driver fled the scene before officers arrived. CHP stated that alcohol may have been a factor in the crash.
Authorities have not released additional details about the driver or the identity of the deceased passenger.
The crash remains under investigation.
