A 23-year-old man was killed after a two-vehicle rollover crash in Placer County on Monday afternoon, June 17, 2024.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the fatal accident happened just before 1:00 p.m. around the 8800 block of Baseline Road near South Brewer Road, west of Roseville.
CHP said the collision involved a Volvo XC90 driven by a 57-year-old man from Plumas Lake and a Nissan Rogue driven by a 23-year-old man from Rocklin.
Initial reports suggested that the Volvo slowed down and stopped to turn into a driveway around the crash site, with the other cars behind it also stopping to give the driver time to turn safely.
At the same time, CHP stated that the Nissan’s driver, traveling eastbound on Baseline Road at a high speed, suddenly crossed over the solid double yellow line into the opposite lane to pass the stopped vehicles.
As the Volvo started turning left, the Nissan collided with the left front of the Volvo. Due to the impact of the crash and the speed at which the Nissan was moving, the Nissan was thrown off the roadway and rolled over multiple times before coming to a complete stop.
It is said that the 23-year-old was ejected from his car while it was overturning, fatally injuring him. CHP confirmed that he was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the incident. The Volvo driver, meanwhile, appeared to be uninjured immediately following the collision.
CHP is still gathering all the necessary information to determine the factors that may have contributed to the deadly accident. As of now, alcohol and drugs are being ruled out.
