[05-04-2025] Man in Electric Wheelchair Killed in Hit-And-Run Crash on San Pablo Avenue in OaklandA man in an electric wheelchair was fatally struck by a hit-and-run driver on San Pablo Avenue in Oakland on Sunday morning, May 4, 2025.

According to the Oakland Police Department, the crash occurred at around 11:30 a.m. while the victim, identified as 49-year-old Elmo B. Jr. of Oakland, was in a crosswalk. 

Authorities said the man was struck by a driver heading northbound on San Pablo Avenue who was attempting to turn onto 18th Street.

Witnesses reported that the impact caused the scooter to be thrown, and the man was dragged under the vehicle. The driver allegedly left the vehicle running and fled the scene on foot.

A passing tow truck driver assisted by using a jack to lift the car off Ballard, who was able to speak briefly after being freed. Emergency responders transported him to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

The crash remains under investigation. Authorities have not yet identified a suspect and are asking anyone with video footage of the incident to contact the Oakland Police Department.
