Minor injuries were reported after a crash involving a big rig and a small car on State Route 98 near Menvielle Road and the East Port of Entry in Imperial County on Monday afternoon, April 21, 2025.
According to authorities, the collision occurred at approximately 1:30 p.m. and resulted in the big rig’s fuel tank spilling an estimated 35 gallons of fuel onto the roadway.
The eastbound lane of SR-98 was closed for nearly four hours as Caltrans and a HazMat team worked to contain the hazardous spill.
The roadway was reopened around 5:30 p.m., though the HazMat crew is expected to return Tuesday to complete the cleanup.
The incident remains under investigation.
