A passenger was killed, and three others were injured in a wrong-way crash on Highway 99 at Ninth Avenue in Delano, Kern County, on Saturday night, April 4, 2026.
According to the California Highway Patrol, officers were called at around 9:17 p.m. to Highway 99 at Ninth Avenue for a report of a crash involving multiple vehicles and a wrong-way driver.
A preliminary investigation found that a 28-year-old man was driving a Tesla northbound in the southbound lanes of Highway 99.
Authorities said a 49-year-old woman was driving a Nissan southbound, while a 23-year-old woman was driving a Dodge Charger southbound behind the Nissan. For unknown reasons, the Tesla continued traveling the wrong way and collided with the Nissan. Following that impact, the Dodge continued southbound and crashed into the Nissan.
Officials said a passenger in the Nissan was found dead at the scene. The driver of the Nissan and another passenger in the vehicle suffered major injuries and were transported to a hospital. One person inside the Dodge suffered minor injuries.
CHP said alcohol and/or drugs appear to have been factors in the crash.
The incident remains under investigation.
