A motorist was struck and killed after stopping to remove debris from the roadway on the Capital City Freeway in North Sacramento early Friday morning, March 20, 2026.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash was reported at around 1:53 a.m. on the northbound lanes of the freeway, south of El Camino Avenue.
Responding officers found the individual lying in the roadway, and they were pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators believe the motorist had stopped their vehicle to remove a large piece of wood from the freeway when they were struck by a passing vehicle.
Details about the victim and the vehicle involved in the collision have not been made available. The identity of the deceased will be released by the Sacramento County Coroner’s Office once family members are notified.
The incident is still under investigation.
