[02-15-2026] Sierra County, CA – Two Drivers Killed in Wrong-Way Head-On Crash on Highway 395

Two drivers were killed in a head-on collision on U.S. Highway 395 near the California–Nevada state line on Sunday evening, February 15, 2026.

The crash happened at around 7:36 p.m. in the northbound lanes, just north of the state line in Sierra County.

According to the California Highway Patrol, multiple 911 callers reported a vehicle traveling southbound in the northbound lanes between the Agricultural Inspection Station and the state line. 

Authorities from CHP, the Nevada Highway Patrol, and the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office were notified as the vehicle continued toward Nevada. Shortly afterward, reports came in of a head-on collision involving a tan Subaru Impreza and a white SUV. One vehicle was reported to be on fire.

Emergency crews, including Truckee Meadows Fire, REMSA Ambulance, and the Sierra County Sheriff’s Office, responded to the scene. First responders located two critically injured drivers, one in each vehicle. CPR was initiated on one driver, while the other was found unresponsive and trapped inside a vehicle. Despite lifesaving efforts, both drivers were pronounced dead at the scene.

The identities of the victims are being withheld pending notification of next of kin. 

The California Highway Patrol is leading the collision investigation, and the Sierra County Sheriff’s Office is handling the coroner’s investigation.
