One person is dead after a head-on crash on Highway 1 just outside of Castroville, Monterey County, on Monday morning, January 12, 2026.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the collision occurred around 6:16 a.m. when a gray Acura driven by a man was traveling southbound on Highway 1 while a red Volkswagen driven by a woman was heading northbound. For reasons still under investigation, the vehicles collided head-on.
The Acura came to a stop blocking the southbound lanes, while the Volkswagen came to rest on the right shoulder. Both drivers were transported to the hospital with major injuries, but the driver of the Volkswagen, identified as 22-year-old Pearl C. of Marina, later died from her injuries.
It is unclear whether drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash. The cause of the crash is under investigation.
